The Papua New Guinea Chamber of Resources & Energy (PNG CORE) warmly congratulates George Kauli on his appointment as the new Executive Director of the Papua New Guinea Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (PNGEITI).

Mr. Kauli succeeds Mr. Lucas Alkan, who served as PNGEITI’s inaugural Executive Director since its establishment in 2013. His appointment follows a rigorous selection process led by the PNGEITI Multi-Stakeholder Group (MSG), the governing body comprising government agencies, extractive companies, and civil society organisations.

PNG CORE recognises PNGEITI’s critical role in promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance in the extractive sector. Mr. Kauli’s leadership comes at a pivotal time, as the sector prepares for significant reforms and the upcoming 2026 EITI validation.

Mr. Kauli brings over two decades of experience in policy, governance, and resource sector management. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Sciences & Physical Geography from the University of Papua New Guinea and has completed specialised training in energy governance and production sharing from institutions in the USA, Australia, and PNG.

Since joining PNGEITI in 2024 as Director of Policy and Programs, Mr. Kauli has led key initiatives, including preparations for PNGEITI’s transition into a statutory Commission and the integration of subnational reporting clauses into major resource agreements—such as the Porgera and Hidden Valley Community Development Agreements, marking a first for PNG’s extractive sector.

“We welcome Mr. Kauli’s appointment and reaffirm our commitment to supporting PNGEITI’s mission. Strong leadership at the helm of PNGEITI is essential to ensuring that Papua New Guinea’s resource wealth is managed with integrity, for the benefit of all citizens,” states PNG CORE Chief Operating Officer Mrs Pansy Taueni-Sialis.

PNG CORE looks forward to continued collaboration with PNGEITI under Mr. Kauli’s leadership to advance shared goals of responsible resource management, data transparency, and inclusive development.
