The PNG Chamber of Resources & Energy (PNG CORE) is pleased to announce Santos as a Principal Premium Sponsor for the 17th Papua New Guinea Resources and Energy Investment Conference and Exhibition to be held on December 10-13th 2023 at the Sydney International Convention Centre.
As a Principal Premium Sponsor, Santos is set to make major announcements within the energy space at the industry’s main event.
Santos Country Chair (PNG) Leon Buskens said Papua New Guinea is now being recognized as a resource and energy hub in the Asia Pacific region thanks in part to the PNG Chamber of Resources & Energy, and its relentless effort in promoting PNG
as an attractive investment destination.
Mr. Buskens added that the conference being the Chamber’s premier event, the PNG Resources and Energy Investment Conference has consistently delivered a steady platform for government and resources and energy sector alike to promote continued investment in Papua New Guinea through sustainable resource development where Santos proudly operates and actively seeks to support the development of and investment in PNG.
“We are also pleased that the theme for this year’s conference ‘Promoting Sustainable and Equitable Investment’ aligns with our key goals of supporting and developing natural gas resources safely and sustainably while continuing to deliver jobs and business opportunities, support the local economy and build more resilient communities. This is at the heart of what we do and is part of our purpose in creating a better world.”
“The Conference also provides an excellent engagement and networking opportunity for all industry stakeholders to receive project updates, discuss innovative ideas and
strengthen existing relationships and to forge new partnerships.”
Commenting on future investments in PNG, Mr. Buskens stated, “Santos has an ongoing focus on Papua New Guinea as a core area for our future given the historical ties, current footprint, and future investment plans. As we ramp up on new projects,
so will investor confidence in PNG. The future looks bright.”
“With Santos’ commitment to PNG, we are evaluating the option to have a Floating Storage and Offtake (FSO) solution to replace the aging Kumul Marine terminal, which has been there since the late 90’s to export the highlands liquids. This would be the first FSO in the country.
Regarding seismic activity, this year, as part of our joint venture, we have acquired about 147km in the Eastern Fold Belt. Through our joint venture, we are investing significantly in exploration at both Wildebeest and the Hides Footwall which ar exciting prospects for Santos and PNG.”
We are also re-building the small refinery that we operated which was damaged during the earthquake in 2018. The products from this refinery will mainly support our operational needs, but we are evaluating if there is any surplus that we can sell through local landowner companies to the local community.”
“Resources and energy companies can only operate with a strong social licence, giving back to the communities they operate in. To that end, we have been delighted to continue to build on the great work of the Oil Search Foundation through the launch of the global Santos Foundation which will work across all areas of our operations.”
“We will also deliver an exciting update on our Markham Valley Afforestation and Reforestation (AR) Project in Morobe Province at the Conference and highlights from our business development and local content program with landowner companies and the impact this has in our project communities in line with our company purpose to create a better world for everyone.”
“Santos will also provide an update on its citizen development initiatives including some success stories since the merger with 90 per cent of its workforce are Papua New Guineans.”
“The company will also be establishing an Engineering & Maintenance support centre in Port Moresby, which will support the broader Santos organization and is a symbol
of the talent and capability that we see in PNG.”
PNG Chamber of Resources and Energy President Anthony Smaré, in welcoming this sponsorship stated, “We are delighted to have Santos PNG Limited to come on board as a headline sponsor for this conference once again, as they have done so for this particular event over the last 30 years. Santos is a regional leader in the LNG market as a supplier and a major contributor and partner in PNG’s development and have an
important perspective to share at the conference.”
This year’s conference is anticipated to be the biggest international investment conference ever held by PNG, with over 1500 attendees with four floors of the Sydney International Convention Centre reserved for the four days duration of the Conference, and a program designed to promote investment in PNG’s resources and energy sector.
